The Japanese Institute of International Business Law, Inc., commonly known IBL, is a nonprofit organization, founded in 1962 with a membership of companies, associations and law firms and incorporated in 1979 (Approval obtained on June 21, 1972 from the Ministry of Justice) in order to acquire various overseas materials for distribution to members and others as well as to assist members to utilize the materials, to know about changes in the world economy and to effectively settle the manifold legal problems arising from the business activities of Japanese enterprises in international business.

IBL’S OBJECTS

  1. Research and study relating to international business law problems;
  2. Holding continuing legal education programs, symposiums on various subjects, Lecture meetings relating to international business law problems;
  3. Educating and training experts in the law relating to international business problems and engaging world-wide in the exchange of experts.
  4. Acting for the members as an information center by collecting materials relating to foreign countries’ laws, regulations, and precedents.

PUBLICATIONS

IBL has published a monthly law journal, “ KOKUSAI – SHOJI – HOMU” (International Business Law and Practice) since 1962, which is distributed to members gratis and also engages in the publication of books relating to international business laws.IBL publishes and distributes to members gratis bimonthly material containing in particular the laws of foreign countries in English and news about important activities of the United Nation such as UNCITRAL and UNIDO.IBL also published in 1975 the Report in English on the International Conference on International Economy and Competition Policy held in Tokyo in 1973.
RESEARCH

IBL carries on active research in accordance with the programs determined by the Committee of Research Staff Members or any research entrusted by concerned organizations or government agencies, for example, “the counter measure against oligopoly” entrusted to IBL in 1975 by the Fair Trade Commission and “Europe and USA” entrusted to IBL in 1976 by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.

MEETINGS

Usually twice in a month, IBL holds regular meetings for members to take up various problems relating to Foreign Investment ―joint venture, plant exportation, corporation law problems ;
International Licensing agreements ―patent, know-how licensing agreement, Agency agreement ;
International Trade―sale of goods contract, antidumping, countervailing duty, antitrust, unfair competition ;
Settlement of International Disputes―international litigation, arbitration, nationalization ;
International private law.There have been a number of foreign governmental officials, international organization officials, professors and attorneys who have been invited to hold a seminar and/or to speak to members of the Institute.
